Heartfelt compliments to all!

Luminary educationist Rabindranath Tagore had envisioned the noble purpose of education in its offering to humankind the unity of truth. Likewise, the present age of global interconnectedness calls for seamless convergence of knowledge systems into an integrated whole. Besides upholding the panorama of diversity that captures the essence of India, the NEP-2020 document resonates with the deep underlying spirit of harmony and oneness. Since its very inception, in our pursuit of academic excellence at CIIMS, we have embraced a model of education that leads to the expansion of consciousness by weaving together heterogeneous minds and cultures. As a multidisciplinary institution, recently accredited for its excellence, we view our evolution as being crowned by the growth and success of our students.

As CIIMS surges ahead with articulating its action plan for phased NEP implementation, it is heartening to hear echoes of our long-cherished dream in the voice and sentiment of these progressive policy prescriptions. The vision document reads aloud our sustained commitment, initiatives, and future aspirations toward transformation and refinement. Competency today is fast replacing knowledge as the currency of the new age, making way for the conversion of walled classrooms into open and inclusive learning spaces. In recognition of this, the departments have gone beyond conventional learning practices to offer a wide, flexible, and innovative range of course options and adopt diverse evaluation techniques, thereby creating multiple avenues for students to demonstrate their acquired abilities and learnings.

The recent adoption of experiential and trans-disciplinary project-centric learning opportunities brings academically diverse sets of students under one umbrella to collectively engage them with critical situations and real-life problems. With firm adherence to the belief that education holds the key to empowerment, I foresee the institution successfully re-emerging as a nurturing ground for budding entrepreneurs. To this effect, our competent and enthusiastic faculty members have been steadily tapping and fostering new business ideas while supporting the growth of new start-ups. As my mind rests on soaring optimism and hope, I commend every faculty member and staff for their steady efforts and wish them an exciting journey on the path ahead.

Introduction

The UN global education development agenda, reflected in Goal 4 (SDG4) and adopted by India, seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all” by 2030. This agenda has challenged Indian higher education institutions to rapidly adapt to the evolving knowledge landscape, including technological advancements and a changing employment scenario. In today's context, higher learning and research have never been more critical as India advances toward its vision of becoming a developed nation with a burgeoning youth population.

India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, value systems, and experiential learning approaches are integral to higher education’s global relevance. As globalization reshapes the educational landscape, higher education must equip students with the skills to thrive in a global society while staying grounded in Indian traditions and values. The National Education Policy 2020 advocates for a restructuring of education to address India’s developmental needs while fostering global citizenship and employability.

NEP 2020 presents a golden opportunity for progressive institutions like CIIMS to reimagine, restructure, and recalibrate their educational offerings to meet the aspirations of a New India. A phased and time-bound implementation of the policy will lead to enhanced higher education delivery, benefiting society and the nation as a whole. CIIMS is committed to this transformative journey, planning and executing strategies for the seamless integration of NEP’s goals into our academic framework.

Key Principles

NEP-2020 is a transformative policy with aspirational objectives and a forward-looking roadmap for India’s higher education ecosystem, highlighting the following key principles and major goals:

Major Higher Education Goals of NEP 2020
Institutional Restructuring and Consolidation
Towards a More Holistic Education
Optimal Learning Environments and Support for Students
Motivated, Energized, and Capable Faculty
Reimagining Vocational Education
Promoting High-quality Research

Aligned with the vision of a "New India," NEP 2020 outlines the following broad objectives to reshape the higher education sector:

  • Recognizing and fostering the unique capabilities of each student, promoting holistic development in both academic and non-academic areas.
  • Eliminating divisions between arts, sciences, curricular, and extracurricular activities to break down silos and foster interdisciplinary learning.
  • Offering multidisciplinary and holistic education across all fields, preparing students for the complexities of the modern workplace.
  • Encouraging deep specialization alongside the development of ethical values, creativity, intellectual curiosity, and a spirit of service.
  • Offering students a wide range of disciplines, including professional, technical, and vocational subjects, to shape well-rounded, thoughtful individuals.
  • Preparing students for fulfilling employment and economic independence while fostering a more meaningful life experience.

At CIIMS, we are committed to rethinking and redesigning our educational services to meet these objectives, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged in this transformative process.

CIIMS Compliance with NEP 2020

For CIIMS, the implementation of the NEP 2020 is more about refining and enhancing its educational frameworks, as the fundamental principles of the policy are already embedded in the institute’s ethos. CIIMS has wholeheartedly adopted the NEP 2020, in both letter and spirit, aligning with its current position as a distinguished institution.

Compliance in various areas is outlined below:

11.7: Establishment and Strengthening of Departments in Languages, Philosophy & Culture

CIIMS already has a robust Department of Languages offering programs in Indian languages such as Sanskrit, Kannada, and Hindi as third language options, aiming to break down language barriers. The institution is committed to promoting bilingual education modes, while fostering Indian heritage, culture, and values as a core part of its educational process. A mandatory course on Mind Management & Human Values (MMHV) is integrated into all undergraduate programs. Additionally, students engage in character-building activities through volunteer work with adult education programs and NGOs.

Future initiatives include:

  • Introduction of an open elective stream in performing arts.
  • Educational tours to historical sites as per UGC approval.
  • Focus on social projects through project-centric learning.
  • Collaborations with renowned organizations like ICCASE, SSE, ICPR, ICCR, ICHR, ICSSR, S-VYASA, ISSS, and others.
  • Promotion of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Indian culture, traditions, values, and ethos through the Centre for Ancient History and Culture (CAHC).

The interdisciplinary CAHC has been established to:

  • Study, research, and publish indigenous Indic knowledge traditions from a historical perspective, avoiding ideological biases.
  • Facilitate interaction among historians, Sanskrit scholars, artists, engineers, and scientists to explore the evolution of scientific thinking in India.
  • Edit and translate unpublished ancient scientific texts.
  • Conduct outreach activities to highlight India's intellectual and cultural traditions.

CIIMS has also adopted the AICTE mandate on IKS for professional education. As a host for significant national events like "Khelo India," the institution integrates sports culture with human endurance and values.

11.8: Credit-based Courses and Projects in Community, Environmental Education, Value-Based Education, and Global Citizenship Education

To install values among learners, CIIMS offers a unique mandatory course on Mind Management & Human Values (MMHV) to all undergraduate students during their first two semesters. The course delivery and assessment are executed in a mission-oriented manner, offering students immense benefits such as fostering curiosity, encouraging inquisitiveness, and cultivating intellectual creativity and innovation. The MMHV courses promote mutual respect, mindfulness, and resourcefulness, encouraging students to adhere to social norms and respect the community, society, nation, and environment. After completing the first two semesters, students are continuously evaluated based on rubrics designed to assess the application of MMHV learnings.

Rubrics for assessment of MMHV

CIIMS also conducts various social awareness and community outreach activities through its in-house NCC, NSS, and other student clubs. These activities involve around 41% of the student body, and in the past five years, approximately 300 programs have been organized in partnership with NGOs, hospitals, government agencies, and others. These initiatives aim to develop students holistically by addressing issues like blood donation, social responsibility, and well-being.

Examples of social and community activities include:

  • Orientation Programs: Conducted for first-year students to raise awareness of social issues and encourage participation in NSS, NCC, and other student clubs.
  • Blood Donation Camps: Held in collaboration with organizations like Lion/Rotary Clubs and hospitals, involving around 750 students and faculty in the past five years.
  • Safety Programs: Awareness programs on traffic rules, self-defense, women and child safety, and COVID-19 protocols.
  • Humanitarian Relief Efforts: Students organized relief efforts for flood victims and visited orphanages and charitable institutions.
  • Awareness Rallies: Participation in various social causes such as cleanliness drives, health awareness, cancer, and AIDS awareness, and environmental conservation.
  • Village Adoption: CIIMS has adopted nine villages to contribute to their social and economic development.
  • Wellness Programs: Activities like yoga, fitness, and spiritual well-being programs are organized to ensure holistic development and wellness.

Through these comprehensive and strategic initiatives, CIIMS is ensuring compliance with the NEP 2020 while promoting holistic education and social responsibility among its students.

12.3 Topic-Centered Student Clubs

At the beginning of each academic year, CIIMS College establishes a Student Council at each of its campuses, operating under the guidance of the Dean (Student Welfare). The council is given autonomy and the authority to manage its responsibilities, fostering an environment where students can grow in essential graduate attributes like creative thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, leadership, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal competencies.

The Student Council initiates its activities by welcoming new batches of students with fun, engaging events organized by their seniors, ensuring a smooth induction into college life. Department-specific activities follow, such as Anveshana (Commerce department), Abhudya (Engineering & Technology), and Parichay (Management), which help build camaraderie and introduce freshmen to their fields. Students then participate in domain-specific competitive events such as Melange (Media), Infinity (Engineering), Sankalpa (CS & IT), Tarusamskrruthi (Commerce, CS & IT), Samanvaya (Quiz competition), Ecothon (Humanities & Social Sciences), and Precipice (International-level competition in the Management Department [UG] with a focus on Entrepreneurship). The Precipice event is held internationally every year and was hosted in Spain in 2020. Precipice is a "National Record" holder in the Limca Book of Records for the largest student group traveling abroad. Similarly, the Cranium event, an international competition of the Management Department (PG), is held annually at a foreign destination, with the 2019 version hosted in Turkey.

Engineering & Technology Student Council clubs such as Aero, Auto, Yaanthrik, Evalence, Infosphere, Spark, Atharva, Atom, and Ignan regularly organize workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions. Other student organizations include Samasthi (Commerce), Enactus (Commerce), Ukti (Science), Krida (Science—Sports), Vox Populi (Journalism), Callosum (Psychology), and Avant-Garde (English). They each conduct events on respective campuses.

CIIMS and NEP 2020

CIIMS College strongly believes that the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 requires institutional readiness. In line with this vision, CIIMS organized an in-house faculty awareness competition, "JIGISHA," in April 2022. The competition included a comprehensive questionnaire of MCQs to evaluate faculty understanding of the nuances of NEP 2020. This exercise sparked a deep interest and motivation among the faculty to thoroughly read and comprehend the policy, not only for understanding its essence but also for its implementation within the institution.

CIIMS Educational Philosophy – CIIMS @ 2.0

True to its mission of providing Educational Excellence with National and Global Relevance, CIIMS continues its journey toward becoming a world-class Tier-1 institution through dedicated efforts.

Here’s an overview of what CIIMS has already accomplished and its aspirations concerning the adoption of NEP 2020

Multidisciplinary and Holistic Education:

CIIMS, as part of its continuous evolution, is already a multidisciplinary institution and aims to elevate itself to Tier-I status through phased and timely implementation of the objectives outlined in NEP 2020.

The institute has revamped its integrated Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs, aligning them with UGC guidelines on the Multiple Entry and Exit System, ensuring that learning outcomes are mapped progressively as students advance from Level 5 to Level 10, as per the UGC-NHEQF 2022. The design of CIIMS's UG education is presented in the illustration below, with corresponding guidelines already formulated and disseminated.

Beginning with the academic year 2022-2023 admissions for UG shall be commenced as per the UGC-NHEQF, with incorporation of multidisciplinary and holistic education and with CIIMS-specific nomenclatures :

Nomenclature for CIIMS UG CIIMS UG/PG Programmes

CIIMS has integrated courses across all its Undergraduate programmes, in accordance with UGC NHEQF recommendations, including:

  • Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC)
  • Core (Domain Specific) (DSC)
  • Skill Enhancement Course - Skill Based/Value Based (SEC-SB/VB)
  • Open Elective Course (OEC)
  • Discipline Specific Elective (DSE)
Outcome Based Education (OBE):

OBE has been progressively implemented across all programmes at CIIMS, covering both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. CIIMS continues to enhance its approach, ensuring technology integration, development of question banks with each question mapped to learning outcomes, and measuring the attainment of Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), Programme Outcomes (POs), and Course Outcomes (COs). The institution has restructured its curriculum, incorporating UGC’s LOCF recommendations, offering flexible choices to students.

The following innovative elements have been integrated into CIIMS’s OBE:
  • Increased precision by defining Topic Learning Outcomes (TLO) at the foundational level by faculty members.
  • Improved reliability, timeliness, and cost-efficiency by utilizing an ERP system for automatically deriving the PO-CO Linkage Matrix based on faculty input, with automatic calculation for attainment.
  • The system is designed to be scalable due to the significant use of computer-based processes.

To foster multidisciplinarity, CIIMS has incorporated learning through research and entrepreneurship projects, as illustrated in the diagram below:

Illustration of Project-centric Learning adopted by CIIMS

It is believed that the project-centric learning opportunity provided to the students would be a tactical opportunity for both UG and PG students to develop creativity, innovation and hands on skills:

Pathway of Project-centric Learning Methodology

Projects under PCL at CIIMS will be selected from the social sector and real-world challenges faced by industries and communities, encouraging entrepreneurship, solo-preneurship, and Risepreneurship among students. These trans-disciplinary projects aim to go beyond bridging academic divides, directly engaging with the creation and practical application of knowledge outside the academic environment.

Flowchart of PCL

In alignment with the NEP 2020 directives, CIIMS will offer interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary learning opportunities across all streams—Science, Commerce, and Arts. These programs will give appropriate weight to languages, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities, and sports, ensuring holistic development for each student.
